Fresh Eyes on CMIP is a working group integrating the voices of early career researchers, scientists and practitioners in CMIP. Researchers, scientists and practitioners early in their career provide a unique insight into climate science. Coming into the ‘CMIP world’ more recently enables ECRs to have a fresh perspective on CMIP. ECRs regularly undertake the often time consuming task of generating, downloading, processing, and analysing data from CMIP and as such, have a unique, working insight into the successes and flaws of CMIP phases.
Fresh Eyes on CMIP has evolved since it was first launched to a structure which allows members to tailor their engagement with the group based on their capacity and goals. There are two streams of Fresh Eyes, and members can switch between the two streams at any time. All members will be members of the Fresh Eyes Directory stream. The second stream is Fresh Eyes Projects, which is a more engaged group of scientists working together on projects to aid all elements of CMIP.
For ECRs who wish to join the Fresh Eyes community, the Directory is the official entry point. Once someone has joined the Fresh Eyes Directory, they can register for Projects at any time. In addition to Projects, other perks of being a member of the Fresh Eyes Directory are:
Fresh Eyes is led by a Steering Group of eight members, with at least one member representing each of the regions* below:
Of the eight members, there are five co-leads: three science leads and two technical leads. The science and technical co-leads liaise with the CMIP Panel and WIP respectively.
When project proposals are submitted, the Steering Group review the proposal and provide feedback to the proposers. Once the Steering Group approves a proposal, they are passed on to the CMIP Panel/WIP (for science/technical proposals) for further discussion and review. Following approval from both the Steering Group and the CMIP Panel, the project proposal can be circulated for sign-up.
The Fresh Eyes Steering Group is a formal Task Team of CMIP. The current Steering Group members are listed in the table below. The Fresh Eyes on CMIP Steering Group Terms of Reference are available here.
